On May 31, 2008, the Georgia Asian Pacific Islander Community Coalition, in partnership with the Center for Pan Asian Community Services and the American Cancer Society succesfully hosted Georgia's First Asian American Cancer Summit. The summit was hosted in conjunction with Asian American Cancer Awareness Day, a proclamation that was received from Governor Sonny Perdue's office. Over 70 people attended and received information on cancer awareness and screening from a panel of medical experts, heard about the experiences of cancer survivors, and learned about the incidence of certain cancers in different Asian sub groups. GAAPICC will host a follow up meeting to the summit on June 12th. The meeting will begin a dialogue on advocacy to battle health disparities in the Asian American community.
