New Report Profiles Growing Asian American and Pacific Islander Community in Atlanta
What: Briefing and launch of a new report, A Community of Contrasts: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States
When: Thursday, March 23, 2006 6:00 p.m. reception; 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. program and panel discussion
Where: UPS Corporate Headquarters Auditorium 55 Glenlake Parkway, NE Atlanta, GA 30328
Speakers: Karen K. Narasaki, president, Asian American Justice Center Daniel Ichinose, Demographic Research Project, Asian Pacific American Legal Center Dr. Jung Ha Kim, faculty, Dept. of Sociology, Georgia State University Dr. Victor Lui, pediatrician Baoky Vu, director of research and portfolio manager, A. Montag & Associates Ani Agnihotri, co-founder, president, and CEO, IIIrd Millennium, Inc.
Why: With the recent growth of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community in Atlanta, the city has become a symbol of the new South. From 1990 to 2004, the Asian American population in Atlanta nearly tripled in size to 200,000, while Pacific Islanders grew to 6,000. Asian Indians are the dominant group, followed by Chinese, Vietnamese, and Koreans.
Asian Americans now account for 4 percent of Atlanta’s total population and their numbers are growing faster than the city’s general population. However, AAPIs have below average high school graduation rates, home ownership rates, and per capita income in the region.
The briefing and launch is hosted by the Georgia Asian Pacific Islander Community Coalition. It is organized by the Asian American Justice Center (www.advancingequality.org), the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (www.apalc.org), and the Center for Pan Asian Community Services (www.cpacs.org).
The report and this event are sponsored by Carnegie Corporation, Bank of America, Washington Mutual, Chung Ying Tang Foundation, Verizon, and Anheuser-Busch.
