Governor Proclaims Asian Pacific American Cancer Awareness Day on May 31, 2008.
Doraville, Georgia- The Center for Pan Asian Community Services, Inc. (CPACS) and the Georgia Asian Pacific Islander Community Coalition (GAAPICC) announced today that Governor Sonny Perdue has declared May 31, 2008 as Asian Pacific American Cancer Awareness Day. The month of May is also designated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
The proclamation states that the state of Georgia recognizes the unequal burden of cancer among Asian/Pacific Americans. Cancer is the leading cause of death for Asian Americans, making them the first and only ethnic group to have this ranking.
In conjunction with Asian Pacific American Cancer Awareness Day, (CPACS) and (GAAPICC) will be hosting Georgia’s first Asian American Cancer Summit. The half day conference is titled “ACT: Asian Americans Coming Together. It’s in our Hands: First Steps to Eradicate Cancer.”
The summit will feature speakers from the Center for Disease Control, Emory Winship Cancer Institute, First Medical Care, Inc., Culture Connect, Inc. and many more. Registration for the summit is free. For registration forms and more information, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
In 2005, CPACS led an initiative to bring Atlanta’s Asian American community organizations together to begin a collaborative process to identify and address Asian American health and social needs. The coalition is comprised of individuals and organizations dedicated to engaging their community members to achieve unity and improve the overall well being of all Asian Americans in the state.
The work of the coalition, in partnership with CPACS, is being supported by the Asian Pacific Islander American Health Forum “Health Through Action” grant. CPACS and GAAPICC were one of eight organizations in the nation to receive the community grant.
